New Women’s Sailing Team Starting March 2, 2019

The Women’s Sailing Team will compete in regattas throughout the Florida Keys, South Florida and the state of Florida. They will race with and against the women’s sailing teams of other community sailing centers, yacht clubs and sailing associations.

Participation in the Women’s Sailing Team is open to the public. We encourage all women sailors to apply. Some familiarity with sailing is the only requirement for applying and trying out for the team.

The launch meeting will take place on March 2nd at 1:00 pm at the KWCSC facility at 705 Palm Avenue, Key West, FL. Plans for the Women’s Sailing Team will be discussed and questions answered. Applications and a curriculum will be available at the launch. Applications and information are available Click Here prior to the launch for anyone who cannot attend or who is interested in applying before the launch. For more information, contact Heidi Ruse by email at kwsceducation@gmail.com or by text at 804 832-4731.

Work Parties on Saturday mornings at 10:00  Because we are an all volunteer organization, we ask that you help us with on-going projects at the Center.  Sometimes it is clean up, sometimes it is repairing a boat or dock, sometimes it is site work.  Please come to the Center prepared for up to a couple of hours of work ... we promise that we won't give you a task you are not able to accomplish with ease.

Friday Night Socials take place at the Center each Friday beginning at 6:00.  These socials are informal.  You are invited to join us, to bring some food to share and your own beverages and, bring family or friends.  Usually there is no program but, when there is one, we will send a separate notice.  You never know who you will see when you attend but it is sure that you will find friendly familiar faces and make some new friends.

Racing is held each Sunday and Wednesday afternoon.  All are welcome to participate, as skipper or as crew. Check the Center’s monthly calendar for times.  Of course, weather is a factor so races might be cancelled.

Free Women's Sailing each Saturday from 10:00-noon.  There is no requirement to be a member to participate.  If you have women family or friends who would like to join in, bring them along.  Of course, weather may cause cancellations.

Free Men's Sailing each Sunday from 10:00-noon.  This opportunity is just for men.  Like with Women's Sailing, there is no requirement to be a member to participate.  And again ... weather may cause cancellation.

Around the Island Race is scheduled for Sunday, March 17.  More detail will follow but mark your calendar now.  A lot of thought went into choosing that date as the tides should be favorable.  There is no requirement for participants to be members but only members may use our boats.  Remember that the race course goes UNDER the Cow Key Channel bridge and that requires tipping the boat on its side and walking it under the bridge.  In other words, only small boats will be able to navigate the course.

Mark your calendar - April 6 & 7  Andy Griffiths (known as Fish Andy) has been a Sponsor of the Key West Community Sailing Center for three years.  He has scheduled some community events to benefit housing for a long term recovery group for the first weekend in April.  We will share more details as they become available.

A vote of the Board of the Key West Community Sailing Center established wind requirements/restrictions for the boats in our fleet. Boats can only be taken out when maximum wind gusts are less than 20 knots. If wind gusts measures 20 knots or higher, no boats may be signed out and must remain docked.

To determine wind speed, go to WindFinder.com and check wind at Smathers Beach or check the wind reading above on Weather Underground. That is the reading we will be using as our decision point.
