During the school year, KWCSC welcomes youth ages 9-17 to join our after school and enrichment programs. Classes meet weekly for 6 week sessions. These programs are open to sailors of all skill levels. Register for consecutive sessions to continue sailing all year long!
We welcome all young sailors to learn the basics of sailing through adventure sailing and racing on a variety of boats owned by the Center. Registration is on a “first come, first served” basis. Select programs require previous experience or try-outs.
Secure your spot, as the limited number of spaces available tend to fill up quickly!
Our primary goal is that students learn and grow from this experience; therefore it is important that your child is placed in the correct skill level. We offer several different options:
Sailing 101 – Our learn to sail “crash course”. It is designed for those who have little to no sailing experience, yet have the great desire to learn. In this class we focus on sailing basics and fundamentals, and spend most of our time on the water sailing and having fun. The ideal age for this class is 9-12 and 13-17 years old. Completing this class requires a written assessment that indicates an understanding of the ideas, and then it is time to practice them.
Sailing 102* – This class is the bridge between Sailing 101 and our more advanced classes. In this class students practice the basic sailing mechanics until they are comfortable, confident, and become muscle memory. The ideal age for this class is 9-12 and 13-17 years old. Completing this class requires an on-the-water assessment that indicates students can sail a boat unassisted.
Little Skippers – This class is designed for younger sailors to become comfortable and confident on the water. Our goal is to build a love of sailing and a desire to continue learning. The ideal age for this class is 5-8 years old.
Adventure* – This class is designed for sailors with some experience who are interested in learning to “cruise”. Covered topics include; navigation, anchoring, weather, and more! Participants will also have the opportunity to experience a variety of different sailboats. The ideal age for this class is 9-12 and 13-17 years old.
Racing 101* – This class is designed for more experienced sailors looking to explore the competitive side of sailing, and learn to race. Covered topics include; racing rules, tactics, boat handling, and more! The ideal age for this class is 9-12 and 13-17 years old.
Opti Racing Team* – The Optimist, commonly referred to as an “Opti”, is the largest competitive youth racing fleet in the world. This class is for students looking to gain experience and skills on the Opti sailboat, with the goal of participating in local and out of town regattas. The ideal age for this class is 8-12 years old.
Z420 Racing Team* – This class is designed for sailors with significant sailing experience who want to gain knowledge and confidence in racing, and tackle the advanced theories of sailing. The goal of this class is to build the skills necessary to participate in local and out of town regattas, and prepare students for potential collegiate sailing opportunities. The ideal age for this class is 10-13 and 14-17 years old.
*Experience is required to participate in these classes. Not sure which option fits your sailor best? Contact Program Director, Piper Blackford, for assistance placing your student. Our youth programs are led by KWCSC Program Director Piper Blackford and our team of sailing instructors. Our instructors are certified by US Sailing. They have instructed on a variety of boats, in private lessons, and class environments. Sailing Center leadership is dedicated to safety, fun and learning.
